Amazon Echo Show (2nd Gen) Review

With smart displays powered by Google now in play, the pressure was on for Amazon to make a better Echo Show device. There's no denying Amazon did it.

Impressive sound quality ; Crystal clear display ; Larger screen than previous model ; Built-in smart home hub

Expensive ; No Z-Wave integration

Amazon Echo Show (2018) review: Much-needed refinements

Amazon's latest Echo Show is a huge upgrade over the original. It has a more modern design, fantastic audio quality, comes with two built-in browsers and features step-by-step recipes; some even have video tutorials. It now has more robust...

Improved streamlined design Outstanding sound quality ; Supports NBC and Hulu (including Hulu Live) ; Built-in browser lets you watch YouTube ; Step-by-step recipes with video instructions

Display quality is only so-so ; Isn’t fully compatible with Nest Hello video doorbell ; Not compatible with YouTube TV

Amazon Echo Show (2nd Generation)

The latest model of the Amazon Alexa-powered Echo Show smart display is a major upgrade over the original, with a larger, more functional touch screen and a much more powerful speaker system.

Feature-rich touch-screen interface. Friendly design with big, bright screen. Powerful audio. Web browser.

Heavily sculpted sound emphasizes extremes and downplays midrange. Screen only supports 720p video.

Bottom Line: The latest model of the Amazon Alexa-powered Echo Show smart display is a major upgrade over the original, with a larger, more functional touch screen and a much more powerful speaker system.

Amazon Echo Show 2018 review: bigger screen and better sound aren’t enough

New screen, same Show

Much improved sound quality ; Bigger screen is much nicer to look at ; Design is more pleasing to the eye ; Software is more capable and easier to use

Still largely limited to Amazon services ; No hardware shutter to block the camera ; Screen-based skills are still lacking ; YouTube experience is laughably bad

At the end of the day, if I’m going to commit to having an always-on, internet-connected screen sitting on my countertop all the time, I want it to do more than the Echo Show.

Amazon's revamped smart display has bigger sound and better looks

Amazon's second-gen smart display still costs $230, but you'll get a much better looking and sounding device. Still, it's not the best option out there.

The second generation of the Echo Show brings a better and bigger display, fuller sound and YouTube via Firefox or Amazon Silk browsers.

There still aren't many useful or entertaining animations in common Alexa interactions.

If you like the idea of a smart display for cooking, calling or watching videos, the newest Echo Show is a great option. But don't expect any extras.

Amazon Echo Show (2018) review: King of the kitchen

With welcome software enhancements and much better audio as well as that larger screen, the Echo Show is getting serious. But is it worth buying?

Far better audio than original ; Great for simple voice-controlled tasks ; Ring integration (for those with the doorbell)

Reflective display isn't the brightest ; Lack of native YouTube (workaround via browser) ; Many Alexa skills not optimised for screen ; Echo Show 8 possibly more compelling

The Echo Show is a super additional device for a kitchen or communal space, while the audio has been given a much-needed boost. There are some foibles - such as lack of YouTube, a slightly reflective display, and some skills lacking screen-based...

Amazon Echo Show (2nd Gen) review

Does giving Alexa a screen enhance her skills or distract her from the job at hand?

Nice big screen ; Improved audio ; Decent smart home hub ; Alexa still a handy helper

Pricey ; Screen feels underused ; Audio needs tweaking ; Limited video playback

Better than the original but the Echo Show still doesn’t make the most of its screen

Amazon Echo Show review

Amazon finally shows why a screen-based smart helper is a good idea, even if the Echo Show 2 still needs a little refining.

Big, bright, responsive touch screen Competent smart home hub Much better audio than 1st gen Show

Screen apps lack polish Audio is bass heavy Video calling still limited

The updated Show is a big step in the right direction thanks to a better design, screen, sound experience and feature set. It's still hampered by some patchy skills and limited support for third-party streaming services, but if you’re a Prime Video fan...

Amazon Echo Show (2018) review: Alexa advances and enhances the smart display experience

The Echo Show is well-worth the extra expense if you're already committed to the ecosystem and comfortable letting another front-facing camera into your home.

Beefy sound ; Very easy to setup and use

Limited video playback ; Thick bezels
