Dell XPS 13 review: Hard not to like

It's finally happened. With the 2019 revision, I've finally run out things to complain about in the XPS 13 (almost).

Dell has fixed this laptop's only remaining serious flaw, designing a super-slim 2mm webcam to fit into the thin screen bezel. Optional colors look great, as does the 4K touchscreen. Excellent keyboard, and decent battery life for a 4K laptop.

The entry level configuration, while well-priced, cuts too many corners. I don't love the woven texture on the wrist rest.

It's nearly impossible to find anything to dislike about this 13-inch slim powerhouse, at least in the pricey high-end configuration tested here.

The Dell XPS 13 still has an up-the-nose webcam problem

Before you even ask, yes, the otherwise excellent new Dell XPS 13 still has its up-the-nose webcam.

The new XPS 13 body is smaller, with better internal cooling and a sharp-looking all-white interior. The nearly bezel-free screen still looks great and there's a fingerprint reader hidden under the power button.

The system's biggest quirk, a below-the-screen webcam, remains. Touch isn't standard, and most of the ports have been replaced by USB-C.

With a new design that catches up to the competition, Dell's XPS 13 remains one of the best all-around 13-inch laptops, but everyone's biggest gripe remains unchanged.

Dell XPS 13 review: Stunning screen and compact design make this the first great laptop of 2015

Taking a hint from TV-makers, the bezel narrows to nearly nothing, while performance gets a small Broadwell boost.

Dell's revamped XPS 13 has a nearly borderless display and a very small body for a 13-inch laptop, plus the latest Intel CPUs.

Upgrades can get expensive; a touchscreen isn't included by default; the boost from the new CPU is minimal.

This new Dell XPS 13 is the first great laptop of 2015, but it owes that title more to a smart design revamp than Intel's new processors.

Dell XPS 13 (2019)

The Dell XPS 13 serves up a new color, a powerful Intel Whiskey Lake processor, a 4K display (and ditches the ridiculous "nosecam") - all in a slim, lightweight chassis.

Dell XPS 13 (2016)

The Dell XPS 13 improves upon our top-rated laptop by offering even longer battery life, faster performance and stronger Wi-Fi in an equally compact design.

Superb battery life; Good 7th-generation Core performance; Excellent Wi-Fi range; More ports than on competing laptops; Comfortable, soft-touch, carbon-fiber deck; Attractive rose-gold color option

Awkward webcam placement; Not as thin and light as some competitors

Dell XPS 13 review

Making the best laptop in the world even better

Centered IR webcam ; Gorgeous new design ; Beautiful optional 4K display ; Impressive performance

Steeper starting price ; White option is pricier ; Still gotta’ move that webcam

Moving the webcam position, adding facial login and a four-mic array, giving Intel’s chips more headroom to perform even better and adding a 4K screen have all evolved the XPS into an even more formidable flagship laptop. In directly addressing the...

Dell XPS 13 Review: This Time It's Practically Perfect

The Dell XPS 13 has been so dangerously close to perfect for so long that the latest iteration left me a little surprised. I was turning it this way and that to find something I could fault it for, not because I wanted to unfairly ding the product,...

Just about everything.

Just about everything.
