Google Pixel 4 and 4 XL review: A slightly flawed taste of the future

Google's Pixel phones have a reputation for thoughtful software and impressive cameras, but this year's Pixel 4 represents a step in a new direction. Motion Sense makes it possible to control the phone without touching it, and some key improvements...

MotionSense feels like the future ; “Smooth” display looks great ; Speedy performance ; Google Assistant is faster and smarter ; Great camera experience

Motion Sense is finicky ; Face Unlock could be more secure ; Middling battery life ; Slightly dull design

Ultimately, the Pixel 4 phones feel like something of a transitional step between the status quo and the future of smartphones. They were bound to be a little awkward, sure, but they get enough right that they're worth embracing, shortcomings and all.

Google Pixel 4 XL review

The best Android experience, bar none?

Optimum Android experience ; Great video ; Excellent camera

Sound lacks life ; No fingerprint sensor

Google’s Pixel phones remain a strong choice for Android purists and photography fans

Google Pixel 4 XL review: Half great, half-baked

If you absolutely need to have the newest Android features and want to be on the Pixel's bleeding edge, then buy a Pixel 4. Otherwise, wait for a few updates—or for the Pixel 5.

Cool new features advance Android into a new era ; The camera is still great, even if competitors have caught up

Flaws and shortcomings undermine new features ; Battery life is just OK ; RAM, storage, and design underwhelm for a premium phone

The latest Pixel phone is usually an easy recommendation, but this year’s phone is a bit of a conundrum. So here’s my recommendation: Now is not the time to buy a Pixel 4.

Google Pixel 4 XL review: Look mum, no hands

A great pure Android handset - but rivals have closed the gap in camera performance, offer more power, more compact design and better battery life.

Camera performance ; Pure Android software ; Exclusive smart features ; Wonderful display

Battery life is average ; Motion Sense gestures add little to nothing ; No wide-angle camera ; Low storage

Certainly a great pure Android handset - but rivals have closed the gap in camera performance, while offering more power, more compact design and better battery life. While the Google Pixel 4 XL is attractive now, we suspect that in four months time...

The Google Pixel 4 XL Review: Stuck In The Past In 2019

Amongst the last big smartphone releases of 2019 is Google's Pixel 4 series. Google's own flagship devices come late in the generational product cycle whose timing is mostly dictated by the SoC release schedule – it's always hard to be able to make a...

Overall, the Pixel 4 frankly feels more like a device that would have been extremely successful if it had been released in 2018. Google releasing the phone this late in 2019 for prices of $799 for the regular version and $899 for the XL version just...

Google Pixel 4 XL

With the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, Google looks as though it's drifted further from the Pixel's original intent by producing two devices that, although capable, feel out of touch with both their Android competition and Apple's latest iOS-powered hardware.

Pixel 4 XL: Same pros as the Pixel 4... and same cons, too

The big-screen Pixel 4 XL is nearly identical to the Pixel 4, which includes the excellent camera, secure face unlock and expensive price.

The Pixel 4 XL has a big screen that refreshes 90 times a second, so everything looks real smooth. It also takes outstanding photos, and its face unlock is the fastest we've seen.

The phone is expensive, doesn't come with earbuds and has no expandable storage option.

There's no denying the Pixel 4 XL has one of the best cameras around, but its shortcomings don't justify its high price. Instead, consider the Note 10 or the OnePlus 7T. The Pixel 3 XL is another great candidate and is discounted at $600 now.

Google Pixel 4 colours: Which hue will work for you?

Google is making fashion statements this autumn but which design will embellish your chilly hands?

In all honesty, you weren’t even considering buying a new phone had the Pixel’s orange glow not taken your eye outside that fateful Carphone Warehouse. This purchase will no doubt be short lived; resenting the fact it’s necessary to own a phone in...

Google Pixel 4 release date: New Google handsets are out now

Everything you need to know about the Google Pixel 4. No, seriously – we now know (almost) everything about the new Google phone

The original Pixel cost £599 for 32GB of storage at launch, with the 64GB option demanding an extra £100 on top. The new handset may not have the hefty price tag we thought it would, but there are no complaints on our side. Nevertheless, these prices...
